A unique project based learning experience recently took approximately a dozen 10th graders from the halls of Carver STEAM Academy to the salt marshes of Jekyll Island.
The scholars enjoyed an overnight trip in late October where they experienced an introduction to marine ecology, as well as formed deeper connections with teachers and peers. The exposure to new environments is one way Purpose Built Schools Atlanta equips students for success in and out of the classroom.
Students participated in beach ecology, salt marsh ecology, and maritime forest ecology. They explored the beaches at night and took a boat ride to catch organism’s native to Georgia’s coast.
It was an eye-opening experience and one that inspired students to consider their future goals.
“I had the opportunity to sit on the cabin porch with a student who was struggling to fall asleep,” said Adam Stanley, Science Teacher and Aerospace Pathways Coordinator, Purpose Built Schools Atlanta. “As we looked up at the moon and stars with the sound of the ocean in the background the student said, ‘When I have a family, I want to experience this with them.’ We talked about his goals after high school and how he can experience the beach with his family. I’m certain he will remember this trip and make it a priority to get back to the beach with his family.”
Bottom line? Trips like this one help go beyond the classroom to help students connect with their broader communities and envision their potential for a future filled with unlimited possibilities.
