Carver STEAM Academy (Carver STEAM) is proud to announce that among the 17 Atlanta Public Schools (APS) with graduating classes, Carver STEAM earned the largest improvement in graduation rate compared to 2020.
Of the eight schools in APS that achieved percentage-point gains, Carver STEAM improved the most with an 18.1 percentage-point gain. Carver STEAM’s Class of 2021, which matriculated in May 2021, achieved a graduation rate of 76.3 percent.
Since APS partnered with Purpose Built Schools Atlanta to run Carver STEAM in 2018, the school’s graduation rate has improved overall by 10.6 percentile points. This is also the largest improvement in graduation rate of any other high school in the district over this three-year period.
“We are so proud of the history-making, groundbreaking Class of 2021,” said Yusuf Muhammad, principal at Carver STEAM. “We celebrate their tireless efforts during such an unprecedented year–overcoming the challenges of the pandemic, racial inequalities and social unrest. This milestone is proof that Carver STEAM is a place where the scholars of south Atlanta can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
Carver STEAM is an APS Partner School that has been operated since 2018 by Purpose Built Schools Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that partners with APS to provide management services for schools in south Atlanta.
“Carver STEAM has truly reached new heights and we couldn’t be more proud of its progress over the past three years,” says Greg Giornelli, president of Purpose Built Schools. “We commend the tremendous leadership and staff at Carver STEAM who passionately and purposefully come alongside students to help them achieve their full potential. Their daily efforts in and out of the classroom have helped make this achievement possible.”
Purpose Built Schools works to deliver results for students at Carver STEAM, Thomasville Heights Elementary School, Slater Elementary School and Price Middle School through high-quality instruction, intentional enrichment opportunities, and a strategic approach to serving families’ needs beyond the school walls.
